Maternity Clothes That Aren’t Maternity Clothes

August 22, 2016

Maternity clothes do a really wonderful job of covering your growing body, and reminding you (through bright color, patterns and terrible fits) that you are in fact growing faster than a teenage boy. Cool..

  • More expensive than college
  • Ugly, no one wants to wear stripes, patterns, and bright colors for 9 months!
  • They fit worse than my 6th grade bra

Inevitably there are a few pieces you just can’t do without, but for the most part you can hack maternity clothes that are cheaper and cuter. And yes there are some epic and super cute maternity clothes available, they’re just not the norm.

Jeans/pants/shorts: I invested in a couple of good pairs to cover my ever-growing belly. But I also made my own. You can see how here. I bought cheap jeans/shorts and altered them myself or took them down to the local dry cleaner to alter on the cheap.

Dresses: ruching is yo’ friend. Like BFF AEAEAEAE. H&M happens to have a line of (non-maternity) basics that includes a lot of simple, plain, stretchy ruched skirts, dresses and tanks. I sized up where needed and still wear their ruched black skirt weekly, well into my second pregnancy with it. If you’re looking to splurge more, James Perse and Splendid also have great ruched dresses (often with sleeves, praise!) that I got a little bigger than usual and wore throughout my whole pregnancy. I also love a good flowy maxi dress (when I’m ok with feeling a little like a house).

Tops: you really only have two options here, super flowy or super tight. Anything in between keeps people guessing just exactly how big you are (and the imagination is a cruel thing). Target has awesome super simple super stretchy long tanks that I just layered with a cute (open) button up. For this pregnancy, I’m super into flowy off-the-shoulder tops, and my fave one is from Gap. I have it in two colors (denim and white/blue stripes) and wear it at least once a week!

Places I found my maternity (and non maternity) preggers clothes: Asos, JCrew, Target, James Perse, Splendid, H&M, Gap, Topshop, and obviously maternity shops like Pea in The Pod, etc.

A few other tricks that make me feel confident:

  • I wear short skirts with long sleeves (my legs luckily haven’t grown too much but I’m really self-conscious of my pregnant arms).
  • I wear flat thigh-high boots with short, tight dresses to feel on trend and (somewhat) sexy. I just make sure to layer a long cardigan over for coverage if needed.
  • I (probably for the first time in my life) wear tight/fitted clothes most of the time. It actually makes me feel smaller.
  • If I find something cute (and cheap), I get it in more than one color and just wear it on the daily. Whatever it takes to make me feel good!

Let me know what you are doing/did to keep your clothes somewhat cute throughout your pregnancy!
